The Difference Between A Plastic And Cosmetic Surgeon

Many people are under the impression that plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery describe the same class of procedures. The truth of the matter is that a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon are two different kinds of doctors with very different levels of training. Let’s take a look at what sets one apart from the other.

When pursuing plastic surgery as a career, a doctor will attempt to become board-certified with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In order to qualify for this level of certification, the doctor will go through an intense training and formal education period of between 6 to 8 years after completing medical school. This includes completing a residency training program that focuses exclusively on plastic surgery, including both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures.

During this specialized residency, a doctor may find that he or she has a particular interest in one area of practice and may choose to pursue that field as a specialty. These specific areas can include breast augmentation, facial reconstruction, or one of many other concentrations. Doctors also receive training in non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as Botox and other filler-based treatments, plus laser-based treatments.

A cosmetic surgeon, on the other hand, does not have the formal training period of 6 to 8 years following medical school. Technically speaking, nearly any doctor could give himself or herself this title as there is no residency or training program that leads to a specialization or certification in cosmetic surgery. This means that a family care practitioner or emergency room doctor, for example, could technically offer cosmetic surgery, though they do not have the formal training or experience needed to be recognized as a Board-certified plastic surgeon. To ensure they get superior care, it’s important for patients to understand the qualifications of all of their doctors and surgeons, including those whom they depend on for plastic surgery.
